Edgar Figueroa, MD, is Board-certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. He joined the Health First Medical Group in 2003 as Director of Trauma/Critical Care Surgery for the Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center’s Department of Surgery. His special focus in hepatobiliary surgery. Prior to joining Health First, he was an attending surgeon for Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care in Jacksonville, Fl. He also served as Assistant Professor of Surgery, Division of Trauma/Critical Care and General Surgery for the University of Florida Health Science Center in Jacksonville. He holds an academic appointment with the College of Medicine at the University of Florida.
Born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico (PR), Dr. Figueroa earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao College, in PR. He then earned his Medical degree from the Universidad Central del Este in the Dominican Republic. He completed an Internship in Surgery at the Fajardo Regional Hospital in Fajardo, PR. He completed his Residency training in General Surgery from St. Luke’s Hospital in Ponce, PR. He completed a Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Tx.

Dr. Figueroa began his career in 1981 in Puerto Rico where he spent three years as an Emergency Room and General Medicine physician at Rio Grande CDT Hospital in Rio Grande, PR. He then moved to Hollywood, Fl. where he served as a surgeon in the areas of general surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and cardiovascular and peripheral vascular surgery for the Hollywood Medical Center and the Hollywood Memorial Hospital. While there, he also served as the Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery for Mt. Sinai’s Surgical Residency Program. Dr. Figueroa served as a surgeon at the Texas Heart Institute, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, in Houston. He also held positions at the Ethicon Endo-Surgery Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Laparoscopic Gastric Surgery Course-US Surgical Corporation in Norwalk, Conn., and the Advanced Laparoscopic Training Center in Marietta, Ga.

Dr. Figueroa is certified in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS), and Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. He in an instructor for both FCCS and ATLS. He has published several research papers and made numerous presentations on trauma and disaster management-related topics.
