Luiz M. Massa, MD, is a member of Health First Medical Group. Dr. Massa is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR), Electrodiagnostic Medicine by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM) and Pain Medicine by the American Board of Pain Medicine (ABPM). He is Fellowship trained in Interventional Pain Management of Spinal Disorders by the Florida Spine Institute (FSI). He holds medical license with the State of Florida Board of Medicine.

Dr. Massa received his Medical Degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami. He then completed an internship in Internal Medicine at St. Vincent’s Medical Center’s New York Medical College program, a residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of Miami at Jackson Memorial Hospital, and a fellowship in Interventional Pain Management of Spinal Disorders from the Florida Spine Institute in Clearwater.

Before joining Health First, Dr. Massa worked for Coastal Spine & Pain Center in Jacksonville Beach, where he expanded a new satellite spine and pain care practice and directed a new American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) accredited Electromyography (EMG) Laboratory. Prior to that, he provided interventional spine care and pain management services at The Institute of Pain Management in Jacksonville, and he built a spine care practice for evaluation, triage and interventional pain management of spinal disorders at Lyerly Neurosurgery in Jacksonville.

Prior to medical school, Dr. Massa earned a Bachelor of Science in Electronic Engineering from the Aeronautical Institute of Technology in Brazil, a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and a Master of Business Administration from Pace University in White Plains, New York. He served 11 years in the engineering field, first as a systems analyst for EXXON Corporation, then as a research and development engineer for the Brazilian Space Research Institute (INPE), and finally as a systems integration engineer for the IBM Corporation.

Dr. Massa has published numerous research articles on various topics, including two articles published in The Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine – “Osteomyelitis in Heterotopic Ossification” and “Validity, Accuracy and Predictive Value of Urinary Tract Infection Signs and Symptoms in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury on Intermittent Catheterization.” He has earned numerous honors and awards, including the Ernest Bors Award for Scientific Development from the American Paraplegia Society in 2010. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, as well as the American Academy of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Dr. Massa is a member of the Spine Intervention Society.

Dr. Massa is fluent in English and Portuguese and proficient in conversational Spanish.
